If you’re an avid dog lover with the will to invest in a breeding business, you’ll love our article on the most profitable dogs to breed. If that idea has been at the back of your mind, it’s time to unleash it. We’ve grouped several pieces of information which can skyrocket a breeding business to the top – marketing tips, dog breeds, FAQs, and much more!

To summarize it all, we’ll first help you decide how you can pick the most profitable dogs for breeding. After that, we’ll introduce some of the most profitable dogs for breeding, then show some first-hand marketing tips, and finally answer some questions you may have.

Choosing The Right Dog to Breed

You’ve just been introduced to one of the best business ventures – but you will need more. Before you step into the breeding business, you need to decide what type of dogs you will be breeding and putting up for sale. Let’s see what options you can explore:

Your personal preference

From Huskies to Labradors, every dog breeder has a breed preference. As an admirer of a breed, you’ll clearly be more knowledgeable about them, and that’s all you need. Whatever knowledge you’ve gathered about the breed of your liking, you can put it into breeding and start your business.

This also means you’re not a jack of all trades – but a master of one. Putting all your cents on a single breed doesn’t mean your business won’t skyrocket. It’s all about the work you’ll be putting in on your pups and later in your business.

Market Demand

If you’re not into selling breeds you personally love, you can look into the demands of the market. Finding out some of the most profitable dogs to breed (which we’ll help you do!) can really give you the headstart you need. What might be a bit challenging is getting to know what’s trending and what’s not.

One way you can do this is by being active on dog breeding forums. See how people breed their dogs, how they sell their pups, and what dogs are trendy in what seasons – that’ll give you little insight. If you don’t see pricing on the forums, you can message people and ask for the prices they’ll use to sell. This should help you identify the price a particular breed is commonly sold at.

You can even ask around for whether the breed you love has a high market value. Look around; you’ll find some amazing breeders online, and ask questions like “Is breeding French Bulldogs profitable?” If the answers aren’t helping you decide, you can always ask more people and come to a consensus. If that doesn’t get you going, you can always head to Google Trends. It’s a handy website that can help you identify the trends for a phrase according to different locations, interests, and relevant searches. Although this is a long shot!

Lifespan

Though this might be an unpopular opinion, dogs that are healthier and have a better lifespan sell better than others. Having a new pup over is like calling home a new family member – you want them to stay there for long. So, most owners love to invest in dogs that have a better lifespan. Furthermore, any breeder should consider the ethics of dog breeding alongside the sales.

As a breeder, you can take this idea forward and breed dogs that generally live longer. For example, Chihuahuas and Yorkshire Terriers live the longest amongst other breeds. On the other hand, dog breeds like the French Bulldog and the Great Dane have the shortest life expectancy of all.

Similarly, you’ll find it more profitable to invest in healthier dog breeds. Some breeds genetically inherit diseases which often throws off a buyer’s interest. Be it a Retriever’s weight issues, Shepherd’s hip dysplasia, or a Yorkshire Terrier’s digestive problems – common health problems in the breed of your choice can lead to lower sales.

Top 10 Profitable Dogs to Breed

So, which breed should you breed? That’s where our research comes in! We’ve compiled a list of the most popular dog breeds filtered by their profitability; just the thing you’re here for! Here are the most profitable dogs to breed:

1. Siberian Husky

Quite wolf-like, yet the fluffiest dogs ever. Huskies are an all-time favorite because of their piercing blue eyes with an active heart to run around and keep you alive. As a breeder, you’d be quite satisfied with the fact that Siberian Huskies are one of the best dog breeds for selling – priced at around $1,300.

If the pricing doesn’t appeal to you, you should reconsider. Here’s why: An average Siberian Husky is quite healthy (low health costs) with balanced anatomy and an average lifespan of 14 years. Huskies are a working dog breed with a drive for an active environment – meaning they’ll always be ready for action. Just say the word, and off they go – dog lovers adore these beautiful pups for the same reason! The lack of health issues opens up a great opportunity to breed Huskies. They’re easy to breed and maintain if you’ve got the will to keep a Husky in an environment that suits them.

Siberian Huskies are available in several colored coats – white, charcoal, copper, red, and others. Whelping isn’t an issue for Huskies as well and they’re capable of birth without human intervention. They’re quite clean with a thick double coat. However, their coat does shed heavily during the summers.

2. French Bulldog

French Bulldogs are one of the cutest dog for sale. As a breeder, they require heavy maintenance, care, and cost. But if there’s one good news, it’s that breeding these cute pups can be quite rewarding, with each puppy selling anywhere from $1,500 to $8,000.

French Bulldogs are great companions and there’s no doubt in that. But health is where it gets hard to keep and breed French Bulldogs. Structural abnormalities and dwarfism are one of the many reasons this breed is prone to diseases. Breathing issues, hip and joint pain, deafness, and allergies are amongst many. There’s a great chance you can avoid common diseases in your French Bulldog pup by breeding two healthy parents. Better genetics can help you breed a healthier puppy. All in all, is breeding French Bulldogs dogs profitable? Absolutely (and they’re a treat for dog lovers)!

Male French Bulldogs often fail to copulate with their female counterparts. Their oversized heads and narrow hips make it hard for them to mount. Because of this, as a breeder, you’ll probably have to resort to artificial insemination, which is possibly the most successful method of breeding dogs.

3. Samoyed

Samoyed’s are yet another dog breed that originates from Siberia and belongs to the group of working dogs. Primarily, these fluff balls were bred to herd reindeer or act as a guard dog. Fast forward to the present; they’re one of the fluffiest, easy-to-breed, and family-oriented dogs ever. Average Samoyed’s sell anywhere between $4,000 to $11,000.

As a responsible breeder, this breed will require little devotion. Although they’re very easy to breed and possess no genetic problems, some dogs might be prone to heart diseases, diabetes, or kidney problems. As a working dog, they’re quite active, but training them is super easy as they’re adaptable and loving towards human beings.

Your primary targets when breeding Samoyed’s should be families as Samoyeds are hands down, one of the best dog breeds for families to have. Owing to their beautiful fur, colors, and nature, they’ll surely sell at a good price.

4. Tibetan Mastiff

The mighty Tibetan Mastiff has long been the supreme guardian dog. They’re well known for their distant and intimidating nature towards strangers and extremely calm and devoted towards the family. Their muscular build can help them weigh over 100 pounds, yet they are still agile and light-footed. All these amazing characters help a Tibetan Mastiff puppy price at around $5,000!

Tibetan Mastiffs are one of the oldest Tibetan dog breeds with little to no genetic diseases and an excellent life expectancy. They’re owed to live longer than 16 years in some cases, which some prospective owners find quite appealing. Some Mastiffs are still prone to auto-immune diseases like Addison’s, hypothyroidism, and CIDN. Keeping that in mind, you’ll have to make sure your dogs are screened and cleared by the vets to mate to avoid any complications during birth.

Mastiffs are commonly known for their companionship and as excellent performers in shows. You can easily gather around potential buyers keeping these traits in mind and picking people wisely.

5. Rottweiler

Dog lovers adore Rottweilers for their adaptable nature and demeanor. They’re quite aloof and stand courageously when it comes to fending off strangers and act quite silly when they’re comfortable. That makes up for one of the most versatile dog breeds – and you’ll have a great time breeding them. On average, Rottweilers can sell for anywhere between $2,000 and $8,000.

They’re one of the top breeds of dog in the States, and will soon prove their popularity all over the world. Again, Rottweilers aren’t prone to many diseases, but you shouldn’t lose responsibility. Some dogs from the breed are prone to Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA), cancers, dysplasia, and stenosis.

Before you move ahead with breeding, make sure your dogs are screened from a reputable source. This way, you’ll know that either there’s no disease or you’re well-aware of it. Breeding Rottweilers can be a bit costly at the start as you’ll be needing some research, quality foods, and training. These doggies have to be socialized properly, so their new owners don’t have to start from the ground up. Nonetheless, they’re still one of the most popular and profitable pets to breed and sell.

6. Otterhound

The Otterhound (named for hunting otters) is one of the most lovable dog breeds. Their shaggy fur, nature, and gentle demeanor please everyone. One of the key traits an Otterhound has is its ability to swim as their thick, waterproof coats make them excellent swimmers. This and many more factors go into pricing an Otterhound, most of whom sell for $1,500.

Unfortunately, Otterhounds are quite rare around the world. They’re bred very less and thus; their sales are dependant on the number of litters every year – which aren’t high either. As a result, the breeders who do go for breeding them price them however they want – that’s one factor for you to add-in. However, you shouldn’t irresponsibly begin breeding Otterhounds and should do your research properly.

7. English Bulldog

The classic English Bulldog is a heart-throb for all dog lovers with their sluggish nature, stocky build, and friendly temperament. Despite this, they’re one of the hardest dogs to breed because of their health issues but also priced high $4,000 due to a shortage of these puppies.

Almost all female bulldogs give birth by C-section and can suffer from several complications – including stillborn puppies. It takes a strong-willed heart to breed bulldogs and take care of them throughout their life. Their life expectancy is around 8-10 years and they suffer from health issues like hip problems.

Naysayers will almost always frown at the idea of breeding bulldogs. However, they’re one of the most popular small dog breeds to sell and one of the most loved ones. Keep up the good practices and consider your dog’s well-being as the top priority – that should ultimately impact your reputation as well.

8. German Shepherd

German Shepherds are one of the most loved dog breeds in the US. They’re loving, courageous, hard-working, loyal, intelligent, and whatnot. They’re your perfect embodiment of a dog lover’s delight and are priced just right – $1,500 to $7,500.

Despite their amazing profile, it’s easier to ignore their health conditions. They’re often prone to arthritis, hip & elbow dysplasia, spinal cord pain, and chronic diarrhea, among a few more. However, they’re still one of the easiest and most profitable dogs for breeding. That’s probably why their market is quite saturated, and their prices spike every now and then.

9. Saluki

Calling Salukis the fastest dogs after Greyhounds wouldn’t be an understatement. These cute doggies either love to lay in their owner’s lap or run off at lightning speeds. They’re perfect for races, competitions, and hunting, though they’re quite friendly and make amazing family dogs. On average, Salukis sell for a price between $2,000 to $3,000.

The Saluki breed is quite healthy and makes a great case for breeders to go forward with. However, some of them are still prone to heart cancer, hyperthyroidism, and worrying blood pressure levels. You can easily avoid these complications by screening your parent dogs before breeding.

10. Labrador Retriever

Labrador Retrievers are one of the most loved dog breeds in the US. They’re bred by most breeders and are available easily around the world. Apart from this, they’re high-spirited companions, with a versatile nature, and an affectionate nature to be everyone’s go-to dog breed. Currently, they’re priced anywhere between $300 to $1,000.

Labradors are prone to arthritis and bone-related diseases if exercises aren’t included in their usual schedule. As a breeder, you’ll have to take special care of your parent pups and make sure you indulge in responsible breeding. However easy it is to breed Labs, they’re still a gentle soul and deserve care.

Marketing Tips for Dog Breeders

Congratulations, you’re one step closer to opening your own dog breeding business. However, you’ll be needing a little more than finding the best dogs to breed – social interaction and marketing. Next, we’ll give you a bunch of hardened tips we’ve gathered after years of experience in the dog industry.

Get Affiliated With Vets

Veterinarians have great relations with most dog owners. People love to visit a vet they know are reliable, whom they can trust, and is authentic. You can take advantage of this and partner up with a vet to market your breeding business.

Put up a flyer, send in business cards, or come up with a business agreement with the vet. This way, the vet can promote you as their go-to breeder, and you can market your business.

Build A Website

Social forums are amazing at interactions – but your profile doesn’t go past your bio and a few posts. You need a little more presence on the Internet to sell your newly bred dogs. A website is a perfect solution to this problem – it’s easy, accessible, and can cover everything.

From your latest litter to announcements, and more about your breeding business, your website should have it all. Whoever you meet or see has an interest in your business; you can lead them to your website. Now, it’s all on the website to convert the potential buyer into an actual buyer!

Luckily, in this day and age, you can create easy-to-go websites in a matter of minutes. Be it WordPress or Wix; these platforms offer you great chances to build your own website. Simply sign up, pick a template, publish a few pages and you’re good to go!

Attend Dog Shows

Dog shows gather the best of breeders and dog lovers. There’s no better place for a breeder to be at than dog shows. You can interact freely, discuss breeding, techniques, dog breeds, and whatnot!

If that doesn’t fulfill your desire, you can even participate in a dog show with your own bred dog. This way, you’ll be marketing your own business, and any good attention is good for the business though there’s a small risk of loss involved too – which might be upsetting for the profits.

Build a Social Media Presence

Social forums are amazing. You’ve just built yourself a beautiful website as well, but there are not many people visiting you. Where did you go wrong? Sadly, you have to invite the people yourself in the start – build a social media presence to publicize your own website.

Small interactions with people on dog breeding forums can be a quick start. As you develop friendlier relations, you can slide in information about your business. This should bring little traffic to your website – ask your loved ones to promote you too (without demanding, of course).

You can either hire a Social Media manager or be your own manager and sing tales about your breeding business. It’s going to attract more and more people every day, and this creates a chain. One good relationship and you’re going to multiply profits for ages to come!

Profitable Dogs To Breed – FAQs

After all this, you might finally be wondering how much do dog breeders make a year? Or perhaps, is breeding a good business? Whatever questions you have, we hope we’ll be able to answer them in our short Q&A section next. Without further ado, here are a few famous questions and their answers:

Can Breeding Dogs be Profitable?

Breeding dogs can be profitable if you’ve developed an extensive business plan, can invest in it, and take care of your dogs. Your breeding methods, marketing techniques, and dog’s health status will determine how your business proceeds. In short, your execution is going to decide the profitability of your business.

In most cases, breeding businesses don’t take off because of a lack of marketing. You’ll be needing off-line and online branding to take care of customers. Lastly, you’ll also need to find out some of the most profitable dogs for breeding (like the ones mentioned in this article), and go with one of them.

Whether you sell your dog or not is a different thing – what you do need is your word to spread out wide. As many people begin to watch and interact with your website, you’ll definitely start to see your profits soar high.

What is the easiest dog to breed?

Siberian Huskies, Labradors, and Shepherds are relatively easier to breed than other dog breeds. However, there’s no justification for being careless and indulging in reckless breeding. You should always make sure you’ve researched before you begin.

Dogs are delicate living beings, and breeding isn’t easy for any dog. It requires extensive research, coherent plans, tests, and approval from vets before you can even begin. After that, you’ll be needing constant maintenance, quality foods, nurturing, exercise, and training to make the dog’s ready for the next step – selling or breeding.

How much money do dog breeders make?

How much money dog breeders make depends on the quality of their litter and their number of sales. Professional dog breeders may be able to generate revenue in five figures. If a dog breeder has gained a good status in the market, they’ll be able to sell their dogs rather easily. However, you shouldn’t abuse your dogs to increase your revenue.

Let’s consider a scenario: one of the dogs from your litters sell for over $3,000. If you multiply this count by the number of dogs and then by the number of litters (per year), there’s your revenue. You’ll then be subtracting the cost of expenses that you added in the start – that’s your profit. Although it might be lesser at the start, patience can get you places!

What Dogs Sell the Best?

Samoyed’s are one of the most expensive dog breeds to sell. In terms of ease of breeding and training, Siberian Huskies are the clear winners. Rottweilers, French Bulldogs, and Tibetan Mastiffs are runners-up when it comes to being the most profitable dog breed.

Other profitable dog breeds exist too. However, you’ll have to do your detailed research before you step foot. Make sure you’ve researched the cost, litter size, health, screening tests, and post-whelping cases properly. This will make sure your dogs don’t suffer, and you can sell your litter at a good price.

Any professional breeder has to consider the financial gain of dog breeding. Make sure to always practice ethics and care first and foremost, but hopefully our tips have aided you in creating your business.

As a caretaker in a university vet ICU we see a lot of CKCs with heart issues. Please health check the your dam and stud. If you have a healthy lineage you’ll do ok. There’s certainly a market for them.

Would you say that Australian Shepherds are a profitable breed? I have a love and passion for this breed and they are super loving and smart animals.

  6. Carol Henry Martins

I’m thinking of beginning to breed Great Danes – should I get two puppies, one male, one female from different lineages and let them grow up together – or might that be a recipe for disaster? (familiarity breeds contempt!)
And – I know Great Danes often have hip dysplasia – I suppose I need to buy puppies that come from the best breeders, to try to avoid this problem.
    Any other tips?

Yeah don’t breed dogs just for profit…do it because you are genuinely trying to improve the breed and you are passionate about them…there’s already too many backyard breeders and unwanted dogs that get put down every day…dog breeding should not be profitable…if it is, then you’re basically a puppy mill…

    2. Gennaro Franco

Ya. Instead of being a greeder douchebag, get a job and earn your own money.

      1. Judy E

Uncool! People who truly love dogs or a breed of dog don’t end up running puppy mills. Just profit hounds do because they are lazy to begin with seeking fast and easy money and they can’t handle the responsibility of doing an excellent job of their endeavors to begin with.
Maybe you should research and critique their businesses to guide others to better breeders!
