In this case, we are discussing the possible difference between a miniature Poodle and a toy Poodle.
So is a toy Poodle smaller than a miniature Poodle, vice versa, or does the term really not make a difference? Today we will be defining both terms and talking about their application towards Poodle classification. It is an important difference as there are actually three different types of Poodles, each with slightly different appearances and characteristics. Therefore, if you’re searching for the best Poodle for you, you need to know the differences. So let’s take a look.
Types of Poodles
There are actually three sizes of Poodle: standard, miniature, and toy. Let’s look into the differences between these three groups below.
The standard Poodle is the most renowned when thinking of this breed. This type is over 15 inches tall and can weigh anywhere from 40 to 70 pounds depending on gender and genetics. These dogs offer many benefits to their owners with their high intelligence and athletic nature. Whether you want a friend to adventure with, or a dog to train, this breed is great for both purposes.
The miniature Poodle is the medium size classification defined as a Poodle who is 15 inches or under. Their weight is expected to be anywhere from 10-15 and they are therefore known as a little dog. This type of Poodle is also an athletic dog, but not quite as naturally as its larger counterpart the standard Poodle. As all Poodles are prone to obesity, keep an eye on this little dog to ensure it is staying active to keep excess weight off.
Toy Poodles are in fact different from miniature Poodles, they are smaller in size and weight. They are no taller than 10 inches and weigh no more than 6 pounds in total. These little handbag dogs are easy to pick up and hold all the wonderful Poodle traits in a small package. This energetic little dog, like all Poodles, offers a hypoallergenic coat for those that are prone to irritation.

In conclusion, the terms miniature and toy do in fact mean different things. Toy refers to the smallest variety, with miniature remaining a little larger. However, miniature is still a small breed of dog. Each breed has their own sizing classifications though so be always sure to check before making an assumption.
