All of these perks have a downside, it can get a little pricey but it’s all under your control. Indeed, Petplan offers totally customizable insurance plans where the monthly fee can be adjusted based on your selected coverage level, payout selections and deductibles.
Petplan Excellent Coverage Review

Generally, your claims are paid between 7 to 15 days and prescription drugs are covered. Phone lines are limited to day time which can be a little annoying but other than that, their team seems efficient.
Embrace has a customizable main plan to fit all budgets and needs! You will need to play around with each options in order to find the right balance of policy coverage vs. premium.
Congenital and hereditary conditions are covered only if they have not been diagnosed or suspected before the activation of your policy. Most of the best dog insurances have some red tape and payout limits, not Healthy Paws Pet Insurance. It’s a unicorn in that respect since there is unlimited payouts without any incident, annual or lifetime limits. Copays are between 10% and 30% after your deductible of up to $500 per year is met. Keep in mind that veterinary examination fees are not covered but your dog’s prescribed medications are covered.
There is a high customer satisfaction with fast email response times — they are easy to reach if you have any question or interrogation bothering you. Once you’ve joined, simply install the Healthy Paws smartphone app to submit quick claims. Your first claims may take longer, but it commonly takes maximum 10 days for payments to be sent.
When reading through Healthy Paws sample policy under Section III, Clause 5 you can find a sentence that can be interpreted in many different ways:
You must agree to implement all reasonable means possible in the care and protection of your pet. You further agree to protect the pet from aggravation and/or recurrence of the injury and/or illness after occurrence.

Three Different Waiting Periods
After your policy’s confirmed, Pets Best’s coverage starts 3 days later for accidents, 14 days after for illnesses, however, there is a 12-month waiting period for the following conditions:

Obviously, at this very low price you will be covered only for accidents and not a single wellness or routine care, check or examination. There is no lifetime payout limit for the accident-only plan, but you have a $250 deductible to meet before Pets Best starts paying you out. You’ll also incur a 10% copay making them 90% of the treatment’s cost.

There are two types of pet insurances: those covering very little and pricing very low, and those covering almost everything but pricing sky high. Trupanion Pet Insurance belongs to the second category. Yes, you can indeed be assured that most of your vet bills will be properly covered and promptly paid but the monthly fee can be very expensive.
Trupanion’s main plan is customizable so you can go for a little less coverage and perks to save some money every month. If you reach for the absolute best and tick all boxes:
- Trupanion has no limit per incident, no limit per year and no limit for life
- Deductibles go from $0 to $1000 per incident
- Alternative therapies are covered if practiced by a registered vet

Spaying and Neutering (Almost) Required
If you haven’t neutered or spayed your dog before their first year of age or within 60 days from adoption, Trupanion’s terms and conditions stipulate that no coverage will be offered to you for any illness related to:

Because it says “related to”, the definition is free to each person’s own interpretation so picking this insurance can get risky if you don’t plan on neutering or spaying your dog.
A Few Optional Packages
The Pet Owner Assistance Package, for an extra $5 every month, can get you covered for boarding fees if you get hospitalized, lost advertising and reward cost, burial or cremation fees. It’s not a required bundle but it can be handy if you aren’t bothered by the extra $5.

Annoying Coverage Shortcomings
Trupanion covers a lot of vet line items from diagnostic testing, blood tests, cancer, emergency care, surgical operations, prescription medication and a lot more.
However, I find the list of what Trupanion does not cover a little irritating since it goes way beyond the normal and obvious exclusion of pre-existing conditions. To that, Trupanion excludes dental cleaning, vaccinations, flea and tick control, wellness care visits, and veterinary exam fees.
Definitely not the end of the world but for the high cost that Trupanion Pet Insurance incurs, I believe the consumer should receive more.

Fido Pet Insurance is the newest quality dog insurer in the United States offering a very techy experience from signup to claim submissions. For example, Fido has a super intuitive cloud-based tool to allow you to set reminders, store pet-related documents, pictures and a lot more. It’s all at your fingertips and it’s definitely a refreshing experience.
Yet, can a great interface and user-friendliness mask a lot of shortcomings in coverage and customer satisfaction? Unfortunately, it seems like it does.
Review of Figo Pet Insurance Coverage
Surprisingly, the coverage is good for chronic conditions as long as they have not showed symptoms before your policy was activated or during the waiting period. It’s on par with Petplan on this level, good point! If your claim is accepted, you will be entitled to continuous coverage at no additional cost or package. Also refreshing is the full coverage of congenital and hereditary medical conditions, also at the condition of having never shown symptoms or signs before your policy’s activation.
Prescribed medication is also covered as part of the base policy; so are health examinations, assessments, treatments, screenings and laboratory tests, surgical operations and hospitalizations in case of illness or injury. Cancer is also covered if started post insurance policy activation.
Keep in mind that blood tests, antibiotics and other medications aren’t covered if the health problems resulted from your own negligence. This includes a dog catching Lyme disease from ticks, for example.
Payout Limitations
FIGO only has annual limitations of $10,000, $14,000 to unlimited depending on the bespoke plan you design. Meaning, there is no lifetime limit or cap per incident. The annual limitation can however be a problem for ongoing conditions such as chronic health problems or cancers. For such cases of expensive continual care, Healthy Paws would be a better choice since it has no payout limits whatsoever.
It seems that because the coverage is so good, the insurer’s agents are being a little strict. A customer has described a case where his pet got put the sleep because nobody understood why it was scratching itself so much. Vet and hospital didn’t know if it was caused by dermatitis or neuropathy or any other condition. Figo apparently closed the claim and said it was a pre-existing condition resulting in no payout.
Pros and Cons of a Techy Pet Insurance
Whilst being refreshing and easy to work with, FIGO’s technology-orientated insurance program can cause some delays or problems. For example, when you send your vet bills and notes, some customers have relayed that the claims are automatically denied if there is the word “wellness” written anywhere on it, even if the vet specifically explained the issue.
To balance this out, FIGO Pet Insurance has a well-conceived dispute system for you to appeal such decisions. However, it’s unnecessary stress and the dog owner shouldn’t have to deal with poor decisions made by, what seems to be, a poorly written algorithm.
