America’s 10 Most Popular Dog Breeds In 2014

Labrador Retriever Top US Dog Breed 2014

Even if Bulldogs are coming strong, Labrador Retrievers are still the first choice for the United States population according to a ranking released Thursday by the famous American Kennel Club. Labradors were already the top dog breed in the US on 2013 after beating the poodles’ decades-old record then and the legendary Labs are reaching the first place of this ranking for the 24th time. Lab Retrievers have met with the top 10 in the 1970s and haven’t left ever since, they gained their appeal kudos to their willingness and ability to suit virtually any role in our lives: formidable family pets, they can also do police work, search and rescue tasks and several canine sports.

Bulldogs have leaped from the 49th position to the 4th in a decade, The fact that Bulldogs rank so high in popularity and sale rankings is not surprising considering their unique physique and calm, discreet attitude. Bat-eared close relatives, the French Bulldogs appear in the top 10 for the first time in about a century thanks to several appearances in advertising campaigns, TV shows and movies that have raised awareness and triggered a huge following. These new high scores for the Bully breeds show a trend irresponsible dog breeders noticed years ago when they started to over-breed them to the point of increasing the hereditary breathing conditions that many are suffering from.

“They just have such character,” said Annette Noble from the Bulldog Club of America. She added that after a command is given, a bulldog prefers “to think about it first and decide whether it’s worth it”

The top five is filled with the all-time popular German Shepherds, Golden Retrievers and Beagles. The latter has seen a surge in demand over the last days thanks to (because of) Miss P, the stunning Beagle who won the 2015 edition of the Westminster Dog Show. Yorkshire Terriers, Poodles, Boxers and Rottweilers are completing the top ten and Dachshunds lost one position, moving from 10th to 11th.

The American Kennel Club does not release raw numbers but rankings that reflect puppies and other registered dogs during the last year. Here is the top 10 most popular dog breeds in the United States:

Animal-rights activists and animal welfare groups all over our Western countries have been warning the authorities about the imminent need for a cap on dog breeding as too many puppies once loved end up in rescue centres and eventually are killed. They also require a much stricter legislation to condemn and eradicate puppy mills where dogs are unfairly treated and unhealthy dogs are then sold through high-street pet stores.

Many would say that we would never rank humans the same way we rank dogs, and they are right. The United Kingdom is on the verge to vote a new regulatory set of laws leaning towards more animal rights and protection. This is a raging discussion but the figures are what they are and it is always good to know what is happening in the dog breeding industry.
